Faith Through Fashion

When I tell people I photograph New York Fashion Week or travel to Paris for fashion events...

I sometimes see the hesitation in their eyes.

We often think of churches, Christian conferences, and mission trips as the places where God works most visibly. Yet throughout Scripture, He repeatedly sent His people into cultures, kingdoms, and cities that didn't know Him. Maybe our calling isn't to avoid every imperfect place—but to carry His light into them.



Fashion?  

Paris?

  New York?

Those aren't exactly the places most people associate with ministry.  They're often associated with glamour, late nights, ambition, wealth, competition, and influence.  Yet the more I pray about the opportunities God has opened before me, the more I've begun asking a different question.

What if God sends some of His people into places where His love isn't expected?

  "For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost" (Luke 19:10)

Like every industry, fashion reflects both incredible creativity and humanity's brokenness. Beauty can inspire, but it can also become an idol. Success can be used to serve others, or it can become something we pursue above everything else. Yet Jesus never waited for perfect places before He stepped into them.      Jesus sought out the broken, and met them where they were.  



We have been given gifts to do just the same. In Exodus, when God commissioned the building of the tabernacle, Scripture says He "filled them with skill" (Exodus 35:35). The Creator of beauty has always delighted in giving His people creative gifts.    Every runway I photograph is filled with image bearers.  

"God created mankind in His own image" (Genesis 1:27)

God has allowed me to stand in cities I once only dreamed about. Why? I may never know every reason. But I do know that His light is needed everywhere—even in the places we least expect it.    We often ask God to send us somewhere safe.    But Scripture is filled with stories of Him sending people somewhere strategic.   That doesn't mean every Christian is called into every environment. But it does remind us that God's mission has often unfolded in places where His people were needed most.  

Maybe my assignment isn't to change an industry overnight. Maybe it's simply to love the people God places in front of me with excellence, integrity, kindness, and humility.

I don't know exactly why God has opened doors to New York or Paris.

I don't know every person I'll meet.

I don't know every conversation He has prepared.

But I know this:  

• Wherever He leads me, I want to be faithful.
• If He gives me a camera, I'll use it with excellence.
• If He gives me a platform, I'll use it to point beyond myself.
• If He gives me influence, I'll use it with humility.
• If He gives me opportunities, I'll use them to serve people well.
• And if He sends me somewhere unexpected...
• I'll remember that no city, no runway, and no industry is beyond the reach of God.
